One Small Step Celebration
Dialogue Vanderbilt is set to celebrate its the One Small Step at Vanderbilt initiative, a groundbreaking effort designed to foster empathy, understanding, and connection across differences. This initiative, which aims to promote meaningful one-on-one conversations, will officially kick off on January 15, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Student Life Center.
The event is hosted by Jad Abumrad, the Distinguished Professor and creator of the award-winning Radiolab podcast. Abumrad, who has long been a champion of narrative and connection, will guide attendees through an evening of reflection and interactive activities, all centered around the power of dialogue in building understanding.
A Transformative Evening of Dialogue
The evening will feature remarks from several key figures, including Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps, the founder of StoryCorps and the creator of the One Small Step initiative. Isays pioneering work in oral history and storytelling has empowered individuals to connect across divides, and his participation in the launch event promises to offer attendees deep insights into how personal stories can bridge even the most challenging gaps in understanding.
Student Perspectives on Bridging Divides
In addition to the keynote speeches, the event will showcase reflections from Vanderbilt students who have already participated in One Small Step conversations. These student speakers will share their personal experiences of engaging in dialogue with individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives. Their stories will illustrate how these conversations have opened their minds, challenged their assumptions, and strengthened their sense of connection with others.
The event will also offer attendees the opportunity to participate in immersive activities designed to deepen their understanding of the One Small Step approach. These activities will encourage participants to engage in their own one-on-one conversations and explore topics related to identity, values, and lived experiences. By engaging in these structured dialogues, attendees will gain practical tools for building bridges across differences and fostering empathy in their everyday lives.
Dont miss out on this chance to take your own One Small Step toward greater empathy, understanding, and connection.
