The death toll for Hurricane Helene has topped 230, and hundreds, maybe even thousands of people are still missing. Helene made landfall in Florida only 11 days ago as a Category 4 hurricane, and tomorrow, Hurricane Milton will hit Florida as a likely Category 5, less than 200 miles from where Helene made landfall.
What makes this situation unprecedented is the rapid succession of two major hurricanesboth packing devastating forcewithin such a short period and so close to one another geographically. Historically, it has been rare to see hurricanes of this magnitude hitting the same region within weeks, much less days. This can be attributed to the climate crisis.
We are now in the phase of the climate crisis where hurricanes are making meteorologists weep on live TV.
Yet, some people within our government claim, They can control the weather.
