(4,116 posts)...was planning to run for a state house seat. We needed her in our organization so badly, so I don't blame folks for being upset at the thought of losing her. But she knew someone had to run for that seat and she was willing to step up to do it. It's easy to forget, these candidates are just ordinary folks who are doing their best to defend democracy. They have jobs, families, loads of responsibilities. But we all have to make sacrifices for this thing to work. If Democrats don't run, they can't win!
As it turned out, we got to keep our wonderful chair because 2 or 3 others also stepped up to run for that seat. I am so grateful to all the candidates who decided to make that commitment. And I am grateful for the state party's support and encouragement and efforts to educate about the importance of filling every slot on the ballot. We've had more support from the state party than I've ever seen, so kudos are definitely in order. Bravo, Texas Democratic Party!

(4,116 posts)I am SO freakin' proud of Texas! And if you think finding candidates didn't require sacrifice from local groups, think again! It takes a lot of commitment to run and sometimes the candidates are undecided until the very last minute, but once they're in it, they're committed. Getting to that point sometimes is like a worm on hot coals...pure torture! And the supporting community is very likely to have to sacrifice this person from a job they were so desperately needed to do. Lots of scrambling to fill vacancies after someone decides to run. But by GOD! For ONCE in forever, we did it!

When we have Democratic candidates to vote for, we are grateful.
I’m doing the happy dance 💃🏻 right now.
I’m from El Paso. My daughter and husband live in Lubbock and they are also doing the happy dance (at least in my head lol).
AND Texans will have Jasmine Crockett to vote for.

(2,961 posts)Now let's get dems on the more local/down ballot races (mayors, judges, sheriff's, school boards, etc.). Those races often only have a repub as a candidate, and no one else.

(42 posts)I’m happy that we’ve made this progress, but it’s a sad state of affairs when we get so excited over simply having a candidate for every slot on the ballot. The Republicans have been doing that in Texas for decades. It’s the minimum that a functional political party can do for an election.
Texas was once Blue, but that started changing when Reagan got elected president and the Republicans, as I recall, pretty much took over Texas in the 90s. And it’s not because we (Democrats) don’t have sufficient numbers to win elections in Texas. In my view, it’s because Texas Democratic leadership has sucked for years and years. At the top levels of the Texas Democratic Party they have been nothing but ineffective. The impact of their “suckyness” roles down through the ranks of the Party resulting in Democratic precincts becoming nothing more than coffee klatches for little old ladies in tennis shoes whose grand achievement seems to be getting Democratic volunteers to assist at the polls during elections.
But hey, maybe we’ve started to get our sh*t together and can start doing what we need to be doing; winning elections at the state-wide and district levels. I surely hope so. I’ve lived in Texas since 1975 and lately, for the first time, I’ve been seriously thinking about moving out of Texas. I’d really rather not do that at this stage of life.

Democrats need to tweak their style so they are relevant to people’s Lives. Dems are perceived to be just a little less craven than the GOP because we show up just a little late with our hair on fire and our hand out. There is plenty we should be doing at the grass-roots level to help people navigate this torrent of travesties day after day. Find and train people who have skills in areas where the public encounters head-winds and obfuscation in dealing with Authority, and help find ways to neutralize those obstacles. And publicize the successes to enhance the perceptions that we ARE the community. We feel their pain because we actually do, and we support them by standing by them and doing the work. Advocate for them. Be seen advocating for them. In every precinct in every County in every State. ALL FIFTY!
TV ads only work if they are Negative. Not our best use of resources.
Invest in “asses and elbows”. Build a more connected and committed voter base. And a society moving Forward once again.

Well done. This is an example for every state in the country.
In the 20th century, maybe the prevailing rule was "All politics is local" That is debatable, but certainly had some merit.
In the 21st century, EVERYTHING is globalized, information is instantaneously everywhere. The rule in the 21st century is brand management. The Tea Party brand morphed into the Trumpism/MAGA brand, and dominated the shelf space. But that is fading. Even with MAGA fading, we can't replace them without understanding brand management ourselves. A big part of brand management is placement. You need to be in all the stores, on the best shelves, as close to eye height as possible. And you need to be seen there year after year to really etch the brand into the consumer's mind.
When a customer goes from Target to Walgreen's to Wal*Mart, they need to see familiar packaging. Being on every "shelf" in Texas is huge. It may take a decade or two for this to fully pay dividends, but you have started something very important.
And remember, even in those places where we come up short, we are forcing Republicans to compete and expend resources, and probably make some big mistakes.
