Utah purges tens of thousands from voter rolls

More than 76,000 Utah voters have been dropped off the voter rolls this year in a move that Democrats in the state say smells fishy, but elections officials say is a routine housecleaning move.

"We’re tremendously concerned about it. It really is a very, very serious issue," said Utah Democratic Party Chairman Jim Dabakis.

He said if it is simply a clean-up of inactive voters, it should have been done more incrementally instead of dropping off tens of thousands in an election year.

"We’re worried there’s something more nefarious and I’m not convinced this isn’t all part of a kind of Karl Rove plot to guarantee what [Republicans] really want, which is complete domination," Dabakis said. "It should be scary to every single reasonable person in the state."

But state and county elections officials say there is no grand conspiracy at play.

"There didn’t seem to be anything unusual. It just looked like they [county clerks] were going through and cleaning up what they could and making sure it was ready for this upcoming election," said Mark Thomas, director of the state’s elections office.

have chosen to do it just before a presidential election. I'm shocked we don't have a law against such a thing.

didn't happen. I registered at the DMV when I got my Utah drivers licence. When it was time to vote, I went to my assigned precinct and was told there was no record of my registration. They looked to see if I was at the right place and found I was supposed to be at another precinct. So they called the office to see if that was correct and was told that, no, this was the right place but because the precinct maps were not in order, I was to do a provisional. It so happened the same thing happened to 2 other people while I was there. We sat at the same table to do the provisional ballot and being a little curious, I asked the other 2 voters where they registered. All three of us registered at different locations BUT we were all Democrats.

OK, now I am re-registered, I've been mailed my official registration card, the internet says I am registered and the precinct is determined. Do I trust it... no.
