Ed Smart, father of Elizabeth Smart, comes out as gay

Ed Smart, the father of kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart, came out as gay on Facebook in a letter meant for family and friends — which was quickly removed Thursday after it was picked up by media outlets — and said he plans to separate from his wife and no longer feels comfortable in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Salt Lake Tribune has not yet seen the letter, but Ed Smart confirmed he sent it. He declined to answer questions late Thursday but said he would make his letter public on Friday.

Court records indicate that on July 5, Lois Smart filed for divorce from Ed Smart, 64.
