Asking for a friend

An 80-yo friend has lived in Tallahassee for 20 years and can't bear to stay any longer. She's decided to move to Vermont (she loves Bernie) and has driven up there to scout out a place to live. Any suggestions or advice about good places to live there that aren't too pricey?

I am lucky my property is paid for... I wouldn't be able to live there anymore if not... I wish your friend good luck

Has she considered what the winters will be like? I had a cousin who insisted on going to college in Vermont because he enjoyed skiing. He wound up transferring to Tulane University in Louisiana because of the extreme cold. I don't blame him.

It's always been a very tight market since there is so little stock and not much new development.

The last 2-3 years has seen a surge in prices as well as even less availability. One bedroom apartments are renting in the 1,200-1,500 range. House prices have close to doubled - what would have been a $200,000 home is closer to $350,000.

Burlington is the "big city" and is very livable but there is little housing available.

Wish her luck!
