Write-ins put Democrats on the ballot

A trio of Democratic state Senate candidates got the write-in votes they needed to get their names on the ballot, the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office confirmed Friday.

With nobody submitting petitions to run as Democrats for Rutland County’s three seats in the Vermont Senate, the county party leadership put forward a list of recommended write-ins — farmer Greg Cox, former state Sen. Cheryl Hooker and newcomer Scott Garren.

Cox had initially declared his intention to run as an independent, saying “parties are part of the problem,” with modern politics. He said Thursday that changed when he learned the Democrats were attempting to organize a full slate of write-ins.

“I looked at the math, and suddenly I’m running against six people — three R, three D,” he said. “I decided I would best be able to serve Rutland County by getting elected, No. 1, so I traded my name for resources.”
