SPOTLIGHT RACE: Kannan Srinivasan for VA-SD32

Delegate Kannan Srinivasan represents House District 26 as the first Indian American immigrant to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates. As Delegate, Kannan advocates for the health, safety, and well-being of Loudoun County residents, and pursues policies that uplift all Virginia families.

He has been recognized by Democratic leaders as an effective legislator who delivers real results for constituents. This year alone, Kannan successfully passed eight pieces of legislation through the House and Senate, nearly all with bipartisan support. These new laws deliver meaningful results for Loudoun residents by tackling important issues such as expanding access to mental health treatment for youth, enhancing consumer and renter protections, addressing the fentanyl/opioid crisis, and improving court efficiency. Through his legislative efforts, Kannan has shown unwavering leadership and a commitment to innovative, practical solutions that pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for all Virginians.

The son of proud school teachers, Kannan grew up in the Tamil Nadu State in India. He earned his Bachelors’ degree in Commerce from Vivekanada College at the University of Madras and became one of the youngest individuals ever to complete the Chartered Accountant professional certification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. In 1992, Kannan immigrated to Virginia to pursue his master’s in accounting at Old Dominion University. As a young graduate student, Kannan was struck by a truck and denied Medicaid coverage, quickly giving him a firsthand experience of the challenges with America’s healthcare system. This experience transformed into advocacy, eventually leading to his appointment by Governors McAuliffe and Northam to serve on the State Medicaid Board, where he helped to expand Medicaid to over 2 million Virginians. Kannan continues his commitment to accessible, affordable healthcare by serving on the boards of the George Washington University Heart & Vascular Institute and the Loudoun Free Clinic.

In 1999, Kannan and his wife, Jayashree, made Loudoun County their home. He went on to build a successful 30-year career in finance and business analytics at NEW/Asurion and most recently with the Chef José Andrés’ restaurant group. Kannan has been deeply involved in local democratic politics, serving as Treasurer of the Loudoun County Democratic Committee for six years, its finance chair for two years, and as secretary of the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia, Virginia’s AAPI caucus, for four years. He remains active as an elected member of the 10th Congressional District Committee and the Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Virginia, and recently served on the Democratic National Committee’s Credentials Committee for the 2025 Nominating Convention in Chicago.
