Theo Chocolate on Wednesday announced it is closing its Seattle manufacturing and relocating some operations, resulting in around five dozen layoffs.
The actions follow a planned merger with American Licorice Co., according to the news release posted on Theo's website. The announcement says the decision follows Theo's "strategic decision to restructure its operations underway now."
The sweet smell of chocolate making that envelops Seattle's Fremont neighborhood, however, may not dissipate. The release states Theo will continue to operate a headquarters, flagship store and confection kitchen out of the historic Fremont Trolley Barn.
As for the chocolate factory, Theo noted in a statement to the Business Journal the space is in an historic building and "will be available to the market for the next resident."
