Seattle's new budget includes more funding for safety, housing

The Seattle City Council on Thursday approved the biennium budget, which includes a record $342 million for affordable housing and additional funds to hire more police officers.

The $342 million for the development and preservation of affordable housing is a five-fold increase over 2019's level.

The council also directed the Office of Housing to research a regional workforce housing initiative similar to the one King County is pursuing.

Mayor Bruce Harrell likes the budget and said he will sign it early next week. His budget proposal includes $916 million for public safety services. The council's budget includes funding for 15 net new police officers in both 2025 and 2026.
