Senator Joe Nguyễn is joining Governor-elect Bob Ferguson's administration as Department of Commerce Director
Another Democratic lawmaker will soon be making the jump from the legislative branch to the executive branch. Governor-elect Bob Fergusons transition team announced today that Senator Joe Nguyễn (D‑34th District: Seattle and Vashon Island) will become the next Director of the Department of Commerce as of January 15th, when Ferguson takes over from outgoing Governor Jay Inslee as the states next chief executive.
Nguyễn is the second Democratic lawmaker to be tapped by Ferguson to join the executive branch in as many weeks; State Representative Tana Senn has been chosen to take over for Ross Hunter as the Director of the Department of Children, Youth, and Families.
Senator Nguyễn brings experienced leadership and a strong record on fighting to improve the lives of Washingtonians to this critical agency, said Governor-elect Ferguson in a statement provided to NPI and media outlets across the region. I know he will help ensure state government works better for the people.
The Department of Commerce is one of forty agencies with leadership chosen by the governor. We are the lead state agency charged with enhancing and promoting sustainable community and economic vitality in Washington, its website says. We administer a diverse portfolio of more than 100 programs and several state boards and commissions, all focused on helping communities achieve positive growth.
