Tukwila passes temporary ban on new ICE facilities
The Tukwila City Council on Monday unanimously approved a six-month ban on new correctional centers and detention facilities, including facilities serving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The moratorium was passed less than two weeks after Wired reported that ICE and the Department of Homeland Security plan to expand into more than 150 offices in nearly every state, including at Riverfront Technical Park in Tukwila.
The moratorium does not, however, apply to office buildings like Riverfront Technical Park. That means that the city’s ban would not prevent ICE from opening a new office in Tukwila.
ICE has not responded to a request for comment.
