It is as close to a liberal bastion that you will be able to find in West Virginia.
As a college town, it changes regularly, but there are many advantages to that -- concerts, lectures, decent sports, new restaurants. Keep an eye on the events taking place at the University -- there are plays, musical performances and other cultural events put on by and for WVU that are available to the public as well.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, get yourself out to Cooper's Rocks State Park. It's ten miles from downtown, but a million miles from city life. There are hiking trails, rocks to climb, and a gorgeous view of the gorge of the Cheat River, from a lookout that has rock carvings from tourists in the 1800s.
Farther afield, West Virginia is full of places to hike, bike, camp, cave, climb, canoe, kayak, and all manner of outdoor sports.
I haven't lived in Morgantown in more thirty years, but I'd go back in a heartbeat. It was a wonderful place to grow up, and many of my friends now believe that it is a great place to retire as well.
P.S. -- from my niece who is attending WVU -- be cautious on game day, i.e. any of the six Saturdays in the fall when WVU has a home football game. Traffic is unbelievable for a town with a population of 30,000. The stadium holds more than 60,000 screaming fans, making the stadium the largest city in the state for those six Saturdays. Cell phone service is spotty at best on those days.
