Up with Steve on MSNBC briefly covered a similar race in PA. A less elaborate event took place in WV. (Damn pix wouldn't download)Charleston Gazette
DAVIS From a yellow banana to a wooden boat filled with eyepatch-wearing pirates, an eclectic bunch of homemade sleds took their mark.
Three two one go!
The competitors pushed off the start and jumped into their cardboard and duct tape creations, slipping and sliding, sometimes even pushing and pulling, to reach the finish line.
You might not be going fast, but you look good, called a dad from the edge of the sled run at Blackwater Falls State Park.
Spectators to the parks third annual cardboard and duct tape sled race on Feb. 28 witnessed the creativity of families from near and far.
A Mario kart from the famous video game was carried onto the sled run conveyor belt heading for the top of the mountain. A family dressed as Batman, Robin and the Joker stood around their Batmobile. A GoPro camera was placed atop a long and lean yellow pencil. At the top of the hill, three little boys sat proudly in their red Jeep with its silver roll cage and headlights.
They were all ready to go fast.
With 37 sleds entered into this years competition, the race was held in timed heats with four sleds at a time racing down the quarter-mile run. In addition to striving to be the fastest, racers were competing to win the most visually appealing sled as well as the spirit award.

(26,877 posts)1. Our sledding hill was adjacent to a used car lot...
...which facilitated our quest for the perfect sled... a car hood!
It was the best sled I've ever ridden!

(5,829 posts)2. Ours was "down over the hill." Nice sized hill w/ good incline. Then flat plain leading to creek.
Challenge was to try and make it to the bank. No one did -- snow too deep & filled w/ small brush. But w/ your car hood, bet we'd have made it into the creek!
