With new legislative maps in place, Democrats set their sights on the Assembly
MADISON – Wisconsin is seeing the most competitive legislative races in a decade, thanks to new maps and an influx of spending by candidates, political parties and campaigns.
All of the seats in the Assembly are up for election and a handful of seats in the Senate. Democrats see it as an opportunity to flip seats in their favor after new maps were created earlier this year and are setting their sights on taking the majority in the Assembly, which has remained under Republican control for more than a decade.
Following the redistricting ruling, this year's election season has seen a fuller slate of Democrats running in newly drawn districts that they say are the most competitive in years.
That competition has brought heavy spending, including in the 8th Senate District, where state Sen. Duey Stroebel, R-Cedarburg, is facing a challenge from Democratic candidate Jodi Habush Sinykin. A whopping $3 million or more is expected to be spent by the campaigns, candidates and other groups, a record for a Wisconsin legislative race.
