How is Liz the Carpetbagger doing? What are her poll numbers? Do you think she has a chance to win?

(107,472 posts)Not sure I agree with the article in terms of being the major reason for her failures... In a state where hunting and hunting licenses are near sacrosanct, her being caught lying about her residency--which only underscored her carpetbagger status--really drove the first (and perhaps deepest) nail in her candidacy.
Most certainly there is a lot of homophobia in many areas of WY, but perhaps less than this article assumes... RETHUGS there are far more libertarian than in many places... It is not a well kept secret that the main hotel (for decades) where state legislators stay during session is owned by a prominent gay Cheyenne man--who is not at all closeted... Ditto many of the most (legislator-) frequented Cheyenne bars. Go figure...
David Weigel knows NOTHING about the West... He is merely spewing assumptions from the vantage point of his life-long East coast perspectives**. I posted a link to his article only because it does cite the most recent polling data in terms of how tremendous the current Enzi lead..

OK.. looks like the writer is kind of young..
I did have the impression that Wyomians liked Enzi alot,
and that Liz's nasty Cheney-style backstabbing wasn't
going over well, nor her blatant carpetbagging. That
makes much more sense than simply the wobbly gay
marriage issue.
Thanks so much for your clarification, it has settled my
stomach which churns miserably whenever I read about
Cheneys.

(17,502 posts)most of us are not that homophobic. At least not so much in my neck of the woods. The poll the article cites says most support civil unions, but a minority support marriage. That is really a distinction without a difference. Although the word "marriage" is used in law, it is really a religious ceremony. Civil union is when you get your marriage license signed by a judge. IMNSHO, the State should be in the civil union business for for straight and gay. If you want a religious ceremony to go with it, see a cleric.

(94,586 posts)MT, about 3 miles west of the Wyo border and from what I hear in this neck o' the woods is that she is not well thought of. The Cheney name brand is only welcomed by their 1% buddies who trashed Jackson Hole and put an International airport inside a National Park (GTNP). That area was really nice until that clan started moving their 1% buddies in such that the billionaires are pushing the millionaires out... so the local saying goes. anyone who actually works in Jackson can't afford to live within ten miles of their workplace and most have to drive over Teton Pass into Idaho to find a place to live... and that's usually pretty pricey.
The Cheney's have outlived their welcome in the state for most of the resident's comfort. Many still recall how Daddy Dick suddenly claimed he lived in Wyoming after having resided in Texas for a long time just so he could be on the Bush ticket an admin who decided to nearly starve the NPs to near death... that doesn't go over well with the locals who depend on the parks for their livelihood and who actually live, work and die here.
Like RMoney, Daddy Dick simply claimed that one of his summer trophy homes was his main residence, RMoney was just following Daddy Dick's example.
If she gains any ground there should be a lot of inquiry as to how that came to be... cheating can be expected.

Notice the darkest counties in Wyoming (on the map) is where most of the money resides and it's all National Park boundary dwellers (1%ers) and oil/natural gas extraction territory.

(94,586 posts)who are actually in favor of the Cheney cabal, unfortunately as well, they have more than their fair share of money. They are trying to run off anyone with other ideals and/or stop them from voting. We also have a comparatively large immigrant population who don't vote. Most of the normal folks don't want over-development and liked it before these places were californicated. I remember when Jackson wasn't a big Hummer-filled shopping haven... was just a sleepy little mountainside village with a ski hill and a tram, once upon a time ago.

(17,502 posts)Fortunately, the desert and the Mormons seem to keep my neck of the woods (Sweetwater County) free of them. But then, there is Big Coal. Since the coal powered Bridger Power Plant started operation in the late 70s, cancer rates among humans and animals increased in the area. I would love to see Bridger Coal replaced with windmills.
It's definitely a pariah. What should be incorporated in these parts are point source generation, it would alleviate grid issues in remote locations, in highly populated areas too.
I was trying to buy a place, a business, out in a remote area a couple years ago and had written point source generation systems into the BPlan. Would have been a prototype for others to see and, hopefully put to use on ranches. I think that would be the best way to go, large wind farms take too large a toll on the avian wildlife. Smaller units spaced out and at lower elevation from the ground that function in variable winds is the way to go, there are some good designs that have solar panels incorporated into them (hybrids) and the come with power storage for a reasonable price. Beats the hell out of current dirty power regardless of the sources used which require mining of one kind or another.
