A private museum in Australia has moved part of its collection, including several Picassos, to a ladies restroom after a court ruled that displaying them in a female-only Ladies Lounge was discriminatory to men.
The American artist behind the lounge, Kirsha Kaechele, is appealing a court decision handed down in April after a man complained about being refused entry to the exhibit at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart because of his gender.
In the meantime, Kaechele, who is married to the museums owner, says she did a little redecorating.
I thought a few of the bathrooms in the museum could do with an update Some cubism in the cubicles. So Ive relocated the Picassos, she said in an email shared by a spokeswoman, Sara Gates-Matthews.

(59,744 posts)2. It is probably in the lounge area of the restroom suite.
In upscale ladies' restrooms, there is a lovely lounge area, a separate room,
away from the sinks and toilets.
And I would think they will rotate the art work.

(388 posts)3. I don't understand what is going on here.
What is the logic of this move? She doesn't want to admit men to the ladies lounge so she counters by putting art in the ladies bathroom. Is this because she believes that a ruling that finds men cannot be excluded from viewing the art in a ladies lounge would be hard pressed to decide in the same way if the argument is further applied to a ladies bathroom where men are customarily not allowed. Or, is she trying this counterplay to show that some areas are okay to limit access to only one gender.
