In his most strongly worded statement since the anti-vaccine mandate protests began nearly two weeks ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that police and all levels of government are preparing to take action against the demonstrators behind the blockades in Ottawa, Windsor and elsewhere.
Trudeau said the protesters must stand down or face severe "consequences" for any illegal activities consequences that include the possibility of criminal charges and steep financial penalties. He said the federal government will no longer tolerate activists who "take the economy hostage" and bring life to a standstill in the nation's capital.
Trudeau said authorities are prepared to hit protesters where it hurts the most by suspending commercial trucking licenses and pursuing charges that could result in jail time. He also warned that criminal sanctions could be levelled that would stop the protesters from ever travelling internationally again.
"Everything is on the table because this unlawful activity has to end, and it will end," Trudeau said. "We hope these people will decide to go home. Otherwise, there will be an increasingly robust police intervention."
While the prime minister said he "can't say too much more about when or how this ends," he indicated that police are readying themselves now to break up demonstrations that have crippled Canada-U.S. trade and shuttered large portions of Ottawa's downtown core.

(84,645 posts)This shit only happens because nothing decisive is done to stop it. This kind of crowd doesnt respond to courtesy, or warnings without backup.
I am now waiting for the decision from the court regarding the injunction to end the blockade. If ordered, it gives the authorities even more legal backup to remove them by force if necessary as well levy heavy fines and suspending licenses and even jail time.
The court hearing is going on right now, am hoping we get the decision today.

(11,940 posts)5:15 pm to work out some details with the court. There is on the table, $100,000 fines, 1 year in jail, loss of truckers license, loss of personal license, loss of ability to travel outside of the country again with criminal record.

(54,854 posts)As frustrated as it was for some that it took the time it did, getting all the Ts crossed and the Is dotted before action is taken takes away any claims of not being informed, not receiving due process, etc, that the so-called 'protesters' might try and use in the courts.
Bev54
(11,940 posts)diplomatic negotiations and they failed so we need the injunction.
Trudeau said today that hundreds of officers from the Ontario Provincial Police and the RCMP are en route to the affected areas. There has been preparatory work done before today, no doubt, including keeping child protection services involved and informed.

(54,854 posts)and not about the blockade. I tuned in after I read your post so I might have missed it. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't say anything concrete about it as it is his base doing the blockade. I despise the man.
Bev54
(11,940 posts)Says he understands how they feel but it is illegal and they need to go home but doesn't sound like he is going to do anything else about it. What an absolute ass.

(54,854 posts)he has no backbone and kowtows to his base. I can only hope they keep dropping with an election in the offing next year.

Isbehaving, a warning negates some of the effect of their consequences.
They know what they are doing is wrong. Period.
Spazito
(54,854 posts)no one can say they weren't informed ahead of time of what would happen.
I am hoping the case currently before the court regarding an injunction against the blockade is concluded and a decision to order the injunction is done today, it would be a major backup to anything the authorities are going to do.

(60,404 posts)But they damned well know they are breaking laws, causing people to miss work, & likely endangering lives.
Just like stopping at a stop sign. Societies have rules. They are, many of them, professional drivers!
I know, I know. I'm preaching to the choir...
Think of a toddler misbehaving badly. A swat on the rear or unexpectedly being placed in time out has a much stronger effect than repeatedly warning, then taking action.
Spazito
(54,854 posts)but it is better to cross all the Ts and dot all the Is so the so-called 'protesters' have no leg to stand on in court.
The court just approved the injunction, yippee!

(567 posts)I was worried about the protesters getting a better legal standing. It's going to get messy once they start trying to clear things out.

(54,854 posts)The Mayor of Winsor just said the following:
"I remain hopeful for a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the current blockade," the statement reads. "Local, regional and national law enforcement will collaborate and co-ordinate how best to respond to this legal ruling and seek to reopen the Ambassador Bridge. No operational details will be disclosed, to ensure the safety and security of all involved."

(60,404 posts)Btw, I didn't mean to insult Canada's justice system.
Are you near this madness? 😰
Spazito
(54,854 posts)I am, overall, very happy with our justice system, it works quite well but not perfectly by any means.
I'm not near the big blockade at the bridge but I live in the province, Alberta, that has it's own border blockade and our Con Premier is doing nothing, he is terrified of the 'protesters' because they are his base and they are all the support he has left.
Just a caution, I don't know if anything concrete will happen tonight, it may take a little time to get everyone coordinated but, hopefully, at the latest action will start tomorrow morning.
SheltieLover
(60,404 posts)And glad you aren't near this big mess!
Oh ffs. Putin's been busy in Canada, too? Sorry to hear!
Saw another post stating tow truck companies & employees havde been getting threats!
My hope is everything is planned& equipment staged so they can quickly round them up & tow the trucks away. That will cost them a bundle!
Stay safe!
Spazito
(54,854 posts)if they have used threats in any way, they face jail time. Almost all of the big rigs are owner-operated so their risk is very high both in direct costs and loss of contracts. It will be interesting to see how many stick around to face off against the authorities. My hope is not many.
At the bridge blockade as well as the blockades elsewhere there are a lot more pickups than big rigs which may not be widely known as the media tends to focus on whatever will get them ratings.

No clue, but I suspect there are some from the States. Imagine having to travel every couple of months internationally or, better yet, being incarcerated internationally.
My hopes are the same as yours.
