Boris Johnson is threatening to sack rebel Tory MPs who vote to block a No Deal exit from the European Union, it has been claimed.

The Prime Minister is set to prevent Remainer MPs within his party from standing at the next general election should they try to prevent a No Deal next week.

What I don’t understand: what do Johnson and Rees-Mogg and Murdoch and the Barclays get out of Brexit??

In the US it’s clear to me what Trump and the Koches and Adelson and Murdoch get out of Republican plutocracy: tax cuts and deregulation. And the immigration stuff is just a way to get votes for that agenda.

But how does Brexit itself help UK Tory billionaires? Or is it just a way to get votes for reactionary oligarchs? (If so, then you’d think it doesn’t actually need to happen, just always be on the horizon.)

20. Good question. It's not as obvious for the Brits.

Probably the same reasons as the Americans, since oligarchs love money more than anything else. The conspiratorial side of my brain thinks this is one more step in the rise of the Putin lead global oligarchy and the death of liberal democracy as we know it. The rational side says they're not that smart or organized. Rich people scrounging around to get richer just looks like a conspiracy. But the end result may be the same. An accidental global oligarchy with a thin democratic facade.

21. It's more involved than a simple split.

There was large-scale UKIP/Brexit Party entryism into the Tory Party before Johnson's election. How loyal those entryists will be to the Tories in an upcoming general election remains to be seen.

As for how Brexit helps billionaires, any large-scale economic upheaval presents opportunities for those on the money markets to profit, e.g. by shorting sterling. And in the aftermath, the country will be ripe pickings for deregulation and other measures that will profit the wealthy. Rees-Mogg et al. have the bulk of their wealth salted away abroad, so they'll be safe.

It's not dissimilar to the situation in the USA, and indeed, many of the same US actors have been supporting Brexit (DU tends to overboard by pointing at Putin every time the UK has a setback, but the links to US capitalists and libertarians/freemarketers are well documented, and have been for years).

There's also the issue of EU laws governing money laundering, tax havens etc. Under May, these regulations were supposed to be retained in UK law, but all bets are off now.

Former British Prime Minister John Major has asked to join legal action to try to block current Prime Minister Boris Johnson from suspending parliament before Brexit.

Mr. Major, prime minister from 1990 to 1997, said he would join anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller in pursuing a judicial review of the order to close parliament from mid September to mid October.

“In view of the imminence of the prorogation and to avoid duplication of effort, and taking up the Courts time through repetition I intend to seek the Court's permission to intervene in the claim already initiated by Gina Miller, rather than to commence separate proceedings,” Major said.

“If granted permission to intervene, I intend to seek to assist the court from the perspective of having served in government as a minister and prime minister,” he said in a statement.
