Tory farce: Mordaunt produces a Day Today lookalike campaign video, and has to edit out people

who she didn't ask about being shown in it.

Paralympian asks to be removed from Penny Mordaunt campaign video

On Sunday morning, Mordaunt, the MP for Portsmouth North, posted the video on her Twitter account with the caption “Our leadership has to change. It needs to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship.”

Peacock, 29, appeared in the original video crossing the finish line of a race in slow motion, with the voiceover speaking the words: “There must be focus on who we are.” The clip also featured a shot of South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who was later convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Peacock, an English sprint runner who won gold at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics tournaments, replied to the video on Twitter, saying: “I officially request to be removed from this video … anything but blue please.”
...
Mordaunt’s announcement continued to attract attention on social media throughout Sunday, with many likening the video to a clip from BBC satire The Day Today, which uses the same background music.

While the music is "I Vow to Thee My Country"/"Jupiter" from Holst's "The Planets" - an understandable choice for a Tory video, if cliched, but the video does feel remarkably similar to the parody from 30 years ago. Spot the difference:

The original , with Peacock in, is still up (she uses Jo Cox too - complimenting her, but still - "political appropriation"?) - watch, but have a sick bag handy:

(For Americans, The Day Today was the first project of Armando Iannucci, the creator of Veep)

They only have to appeal to a very narrow, and rather extreme electorate in the form of grassroots Tories and this contest is almost certain to deliver a new PM with no idea about how to work for anyone else.

None of the candidates seem to have much idea of how to clean up the sleaze and dishonesty of the Johnson era, let alone how to deal with rampant inflation, or collapsing trade to name but 2 problems.

I don't expect the more moderate runners such as Tugdenhat or Hunt to make much headway. Morduant and Braverman look error prone. Sunak appears to have a big target on his back. Zahawi is making all sorts of wild, undeliverable promises. Grant Schapps has too much personal baggage even for this lot. Kemi Badenoch may be someone who's politics I firmly dislike, but she seems to be quietly building up a fair bit of support.
