Anyone uses anti virus program?

Some years back I had Intego and then I uninstalled it because it appeared to interfere with the router for my spouse's laptop.

Now Comcast modem has a built it WiFi and I am getting emails - bombarded, really - from Intego about their "Washing Machine."

Is it worth it? Having used a Mac since 1987, I always felt secure that Mac was immune to viruses but the reason, or one of the reasons, was that not enough were using a Mac to be worth it for someone to develop a virus. Now, am not sure.

What do you guys say?

And it did identify a number of malicious files, not that any of them had necessarily damaged my system but it did find them and allow me to delete.

I did this because Google searches were coming up with a nasty warning, as if I was a terrorist or something, and asking for a Captcha before providing results.

God I hate Google more and more each day.

All are free downloads and they're all good.

Sophos runs in realtime.

Not familiar with Intego.

There are many scams out there that claim to provide a free anti-virus tool and when you download the tool, you download THEIR malicious files, their virus, and then you have to pay them to get rid of it.

And they also market aggressively.

And when I first used it it was recommended to me by a trusted friend who is a Mac user.

And... when I read that your suggestion is free I felt a bit apprehensive in the "you get what you pay for..." But with more of you recommending clamxav I am willing to give it a try.
