Buying a new iPhone

I was very fortunate to have a new iPhone every 2 years, fully set up and supported by my company IT department, but I retired three years ago and now have to buy a new one.
If anyone cares to offer any advice, it would be appreciated.

1- Which phone should I buy, and where is the best place to get it?
2- Will they fully set up the new phone and transfer all of my date, photos, notes, etc to the new phone?
3- Will the new phone then be synced to my computer and iPad as it is now?
4- And finally, is my Apple ID all I need for this process? There is not a separate iCloud ID?

3. Yes, and they should be able to transfer everything over.

And syncing devices proved to be very easy. Like, honestly, the trickiest part of the whole process for me was the screen protector 🙂

2. I have an iPhone SE

It’s about the same size as the iPhone 6 and much, much cheaper than the other new iPhones. I set it up on Verizon’s web-site as that’s my carrier. Which carrier is best really depends on where you live and if you will do any traveling. And yes, your Apple ID and password is all you need.

4. I am an anti-Apple person

Everyone else in my family is Apple except me. I think you can easily get the data transferred via an Apple Store, etc. Others here will be better placed to tell you how to transfer data.

One thing I would suggest you do is call your existing mobile phone company and see what they can do to get you a newer phone and better plan. I hadn't changed plans in about four years, and when I did (earlier this year), I was able to get a new plan that was far cheaper than the one I was on and get a buy-one-get-one free iPhone offer for my family for very little more than I was paying now, when I factored in the new cheaper monthly plan. Plus I got 3 additional lines.

If you get no joy, check around with other providers. All of the mobile phone companies have deals like this. You will get locked in for a period, but in our case, that was fine.

If your current provider finds out you might leave, they can magically come up with better deals! (at least in my experience).

5. I always have the Apple Store transfer my data

I probably could do it but I always let them do it because I’m there buying my phone anyway. The Apple Store was great enforcing Covid restrictions.

7. We got an iPhone for my middle child at Best Buy

They transferred number and synced the phone

8. I always buy my phone from the Apple store.

They will transfer everything for you. They give you a 2 year warranty, the providers are for 1 year.
The big thing for me is that I can change carriers with the phone from Apple, if you get it from AT&T or other carrier, your phone will not work with any other one.
When Spectrum came out with a better rate than Verizon, I went into the Verizon store and said I could get a better deal with the other company, they said I'd have to buy a new phone. I told them I bought mine at the Apple store. The guy said hold on a minute, I have talk to my manager. Her came back and told me they just came out with a new plan that would be the same price. Yah right. Anyway I got the same deal that saved me over $60/month.

9. Major difference is in the camera.... if photography is important to you.

If so, go for the 11 and not the 12.

iPhone 11 is cheaper and has the same photo capacity.

I believe I am correct that unless you are into gaming, the more expensive guts of the 12 are not worth the extra $.
