I cannot open PDF files attached to emails - edit, fixed

Any idea how I can tackle this?

Sometimes it helps to use PDF software. One option is Adobe Reader, which is free and easily findable on the internet. Also PDFs are better behaved on computers than on cell phones.

Click on them in mail and they "preview", then say "done" and you are back to mail.
Download (on a phone, to "files" wherever you set the default location) and they will open.

Varies a bit whether ios (phone or ipad) or computer, but really the same deal.

Can you give more details?

Of course, it was started earlier. The email just had a note which of course was not clickable.

When all else fail, restart...
