VA Governors have ran for the US Senate right after they leave the Governorship!

Robb-D(1988)
Macaca Allen-R(2000)
Mark Warner-D(2008)
Kaine-D(2012)

Youngkin-R leaves office in 2026.
Mark Warner’s term expires in 2026.
Does Youngkin-R run for the US Senate in 2026?

But he has to be careful not to go too far to the right. He ran a very good campaign (against a very bad campaign) just after a tumultuous year. Turn out was good but he won by less than 3%. In a statewide election with everyone really keyed in a far right nutball record won’t help him. He slid around doing that in 2021. I don’t think he’s that extreme. He has to be careful to avoid getting pulled into the DeSantis Abbott world.

Virginians like moderate candidates and if they have seniority in Congress, that’s another plus. Youngkin can’t top Warner’s business success, either.

This is barring any disastrous events between now and then, of course.

Given his early partisan moves (e.g. firing state attorneys who are even remotely left leaning), he's got ambitions for higher office.

Agree with earlier comment that Warner will be very tough to beat by anyone.
