Archaeologists find lost remains of a Mayan civilization hidden in Campeche

written by Yucatan Times July 19, 2024

Archaeologists from the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the National Institute of Anthropology and History made a relevant archaeological discovery in the Balam Ku Biosphere Reserve in Campeche. Using Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, researchers detected various ancient structures and settlements of the Mayan civilization in approximately 140 square kilometers. This discovery reveals a complex network of constructions hidden for centuries in the dense Mexican jungle.

Among the most notable elements discovered by the team is a Mayan ball game court located in the center of one of the settlements. This space, considered a symbol of wealth and power for the Mayans, underlines the cultural and social relevance of the region. Additionally, evidence of underground structures was found beneath the court, raising new questions about the history and use of these ancient buildings.

While exploring the Balam Ku Biosphere Reserve using Lidar technology, they encountered unique shapes in approximately 140 square kilometers (54 square miles). This discovery revealed modest settlements and ancient structures that were barely standing.

The most intriguing thing was the discovery of an underground construction under the ball court. They discovered parts of a building covered with remains of painted stucco beneath the court, said archaeologist Ivan Šprajc.

This finding raises numerous questions about the original use and significance of the structure. Although there is speculation about its relevance, Šprajc warns: “Only further excavations can reveal the shape of that underlying building and its function.”

(Ha ha, this one is funny: the guide opens his tour, smoking a lot, as he climbs up a pyramid. How many times have you decided to smoke while tromping through a humid, hot jungle, up and down a lot of stone stairways?)

Video I stumbled across concerning a city far to the West in Mexico, with round pyramids!

I have to post it here for anyone who might be interested. I'm coming back to study it again, more slowly. So damned different! OMG!

1. Take from this what you will, and I am certainly not boasting about it...

But, back in the day I did land surveying and helped lay out a major subdivision and golf course outside of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It was rather hilly at first, so hiking miles into and out of the property was not taken lightly. (Once some roads were cleared and we could drive into it, we were in heaven.) However, once we smokers got accustomed to the hiking, we learned that the hike was usually the best time to 'smoke 'em if ya got 'em!'. I used to say that we looked like a line of railroad engines climbing a steep grade and then rolling dow the other side. (This was the only job site where I remember having to actually climb up and down to go do surveys.)

This may have been why I had to finally stop it with the tobacco many years ago. That and trying to prolong my voice.

would be so vertical! It's good to hear the information. I would have always imagined it was all flat land!
i
There would be some double-takes from people witnessing a group of smokers intently applying themselves to some seriously difficult upward hiking.

That would have made a good video clip!

It's good you made it through the shift in routine to come out on the other side of a habit which may have started being more anxiety-provoking the longer you had it. Once you're out long enough, you never miss it! It gives you back all that time you missed when you could have been watching paint drying!

3. Now I'm starting to understand why Mexico's Pres. Lopez Obrador was determined to get attention for these structures!

The "New World" is going to start being considered in a totally different light once more is realized about how wildly ignorant the Eurocentric culture champions have been about the Hemisphere they stole, plundered, and possibly have already destroyed!

There's a vast amount of information waiting to be discovered in the years ahead of us! It's begrudgingly acknowledged that some sites in Peru, possibly Brazil, etc., predate the Pyramids in Egypt. Can't wait until the results of new investigation accomplished with new technology starts rolling in! (Reminds one of breakthroughs in space exploration!)

Thanks for taking the time, rampartd.

i've towed a side scan near cozumel. there is stuff down there that i hope to see more of if i live long enough.

the ice age is not so long ago that the there may be much older and greater civilizations now covered by the ocean.

the black sea is another place that needs a close look by divers.

in so many ways we live in a world of miracles. thanks again , judi.
