Workers at this Amazon facility plan to hold union vote

Employees at Amazon's new fulfillment center in Bessemer AL could soon vote on whether to unionize.

Paperwork was filed with the National Labor Relations Board for a union vote at the facility, which employs approximately 1,500. The filing was first reported by the Washington Post.

If successful, employees at the facility would be represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. A site launched by organizers of the effort said potential for improved pay and workplace safety issues are among the reasons for launching the unionization effort.

Amazon has denied those claims, and an Amazon spokesperson told the Post that the company did not believe the views of those behind the unionization push represented the majority of employees' views.

While there is certainly a union presence in Alabama, the state is not generally regarded as a highly unionized state, which has made it attractive to major employers and manufacturers over the year.
