National Union Leaders Visit Omaha, Participate in AFL-CIO Roundtable

AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Elissa McBride and AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler made a trip to Omaha and attended the Nebraska State AFL-CIO Nebraska Women’s Economic Roundtable in October. While in Omaha, they also stopped by our Nebraska Department of Transportation District 2 yard to chat with our union members.

The NE AFL-CIO roundtable offered an opportunity for leaders from across Nebraska to discuss women’s issues and the economic policies that affect working people, the important upcoming local elections, and how unions empower working families by enabling workers to negotiate their wages and terms and conditions of employment.

At the roundtable, McBride and Shuler discussed what AFSCME and the AFL-CIO do at the national level to support workers. They celebrated Nebraska’s successes and acknowledged our ongoing efforts to protect and strengthen worker’s rights. All of the leaders at the roundtable shared the same sentiment: we’re stronger together!

NAPE/AFSCME member Toni Bonsera (DHHS, Omaha) was a participant in the roundtable.

“I was honored to be invited to participate in the Women’s Economic Roundtable. Although I wasn’t sure what to expect, the experience was inspiring and educational. There were several ‘heavy hitters’ who are either elected to office or are running for office, as well as some important community partners,” Toni said. “It’s so important that we support women who represent our values, especially in the labor movement. Union and public sector jobs lift women out of poverty and give us and our sisters a shot at the middle class and we must continue to stand in solidarity with one another.”
