Map: Where is Childhood Homelessness Getting Worse? ( 2013)
The troubling new report casts light on a problem that four years into the nations economic recovery, has only grown worse. The total number of homeless children enrolled in preschools and K-12 programs rose 10 percent during the 2011-12 school year and 24 percent since the beginning of the 2009-10 academic year, according to the report.
In all, 41 states saw a rise in homelessness among school-aged children last year. Fifteen states reported a gain of at least 10 percent while another 10 states reported spikes of 20 percent or more. The map below breaks down the changes:

(9,148 posts)bigoted & racist towards their Native people. Or anyone who isn't pasty white & redneck & republican.
They have always mocked the Native people as being drunks & single mothers, but much of the problem also lies with the Native Tribes themselves. I think there have been some attempts over the years to provide education & tools beyond the reservations but much is lost on drug market.
Senator Byron Dorgan did much to advance & provide college education & advantages for the Souix, but I believe the funding may have been cut by the Bush Admin. I recall Senator Dorgan having to fight to fund the United Tribes education system near Bismarck, ND. He did much work on this program & funds were threatend under Bush jr.
America's Native Reservations are another serious shameful blight.
Indeed.

(8,159 posts)Having worked on Cheyenne River, Pine Ridge, rosebud, and Standing Rock Res I have great respect for my Lakota friends.
Yes you are right in that many people look down on them.
They only see what they want to see but do not see what caused the problems for many.
I was in medical and worked on the above Res. along with Lakota professionals.
The treatment over generations has created the problems and it's not much improved now.
I remember during a state election the tribe was told there could be no food offering. There were people at the polling place taking pictures of folks and car license. This was an election that a democrat was very much favorited by the Lakota.
The pictures scared many many from voting and The Dem lost.

Others should be so wise.
I love them too.

(9,148 posts)Been keeping a low profile here lately since just about everything I read seems to really piss me off! Geez I have to take a step back and just breathe or I will be responding irately to someone's post & probably get alerted on, & it's best to just take a break.
BUT THIS pbs program really hit hard. Kids, dogs, homeless & hungry.
WTF America??
What has become of this Country?
Thanks to Frontline for addressing this as they did. It should be repeated Primetime.
State governments should be called out & publicly shamed.
This is a cause I could actually get behind and work to change.
It is next door to all of us and at our Local & State levels can be approached.
It is an Election Year after all.
Time to shine a bright light on this sin of human making.
Politicians owe these people an answer.
I'm in.
Night all.

(9,148 posts)s. of a b. Makes me so ill to see this.
This State is so filthy rich with oil that there should be NO homeless & hungry children.
In the State of North Dakota, childhood poverty & homelessness is a choice of the State itself, then. No other reason exists.
It's certainly not for lack of means to provide.
Filthy Greedy State.

(9,148 posts)Dear Senator:
I want an explanation, please.
Do something!
I expect an answer & the homeless & hungry children of your oil rich State deserve something from you also..
Thanks, I'll be monitoring the numbers.
