Any opinions on Rivian stock?
The IPO was today. My daughter works for a supplier to the company and she has nothing but praise for it. She talked me out of buying Lucid which went from the low $20s to $45 almost overnight. Rivian went from $78 to $120, then has retreated to around $100. I think I'll give it a week and then look into buying some. Thoughts?

(5,127 posts)It happens with most IPOs. This gives time for due diligence.
When it comes to automotive start up companies, their greatest challenges are supply chain, experienced workforce, and retail outlets.

(50 posts)I bought some today. Got in for more than I wanted to, but this is a long hold for me.

(5,784 posts)But I do know stocks can be very volatile after IPO. Unless you know a lot about the company, you have no idea if rge stock is overvalued due to a buying frenzy simply because it just IPO'd or not. I make it a point to avoid investing in new issues until a track record is clearly established on a chart. I might miss out on a gain by waiting, but I'm more interested in avoiding loses buying into an overvalued stock.
Sure, but no advice.
My son works for Tesla and he and I have been waiting anxiously for Rivian to go public. In the meantime, he's invested in Lucid and Panasonic (and, of course, Tesla).
I just dipped a toe in at the dip this afternoon, just to say I did it.
IMO, the EV market and suppliers are just getting warmed up. I was too chicken when Apple started off and missed out on what became a goldmine in undeveloped property in central AZ. I've just never been a gambler. But...I'm tired of my kid having all the fun.
Good luck to your daughter on what I consider a lucrative position in the future of EVs!

(47,638 posts)There are patterns, but with a hot industry like EV's I have no experience. My claim to IPO fame was to scalp Boston Chicken same day.
Twitter was a nice IPO. Pulled back to about 40% of it's IPO price, around $17-18 I think, 2-3 years later and that was the bottom. https://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=TWTR&ty=c&ta=0&p=m
