House Passes DC Private School Vouchers Program Reauthorization
Speaker John Boehners (R-OH) bill to reauthorize the DC private school voucher program through 2021 was approved by the House on a 240-191 vote. Seven Republicans broke with their party to oppose the bill while two Democrats supported it. The White House, along with AAUW, opposed this legislation (H.R. 10) as the voucher program applies public taxpayer funds to unaccredited private schools which are not required to follow Title IX regulations. Several federal studies have shown that the voucher program has shown no statistically significant academic benefit for students. They have, however, shown a range of accountability shortfalls and mismanaged fiscal policies. Over 4,000 AAUW activists sent messages to their members of Congress to oppose H.R. 10 this week. A companion bill is currently pending in the Senate
