How to get volunteers
I have volunteered for AFS since 1994. I was named Chair of our local chapter in 1998 and have stayed with it all this time. I've wanted to step down for some time, but can't find someone willing to take on the title. On top of that, our current treasurer developed a vision problem and isn't able to serve. Other people sitting on the board are getting older and we've lost some members to retirement or death.
AFS wants all of its activities to be word of mouth. If you are a volunteer, you have to renew your status every year, which includes references, a background check which includes criminal and financial checks. Even if you aren't around the students, you have to get checked. I've never minded that myself, and I haven't met people who mention that they care. However, as time goes on, I know fewer and fewer people. I've been staying home since Covid, and rarely talk to anyone in person. I have told the local members, the region members and the national that our chapter needs new, young volunteers.
But hosting or exchanging is not a prerequisite for volunteering as a chapter board member. I think being a trustworthy, responsible adult who can interact with teenagers and host families, and be a good example to the community is plenty enough. How can I find the people I need?
Is there anything I can do to revive my beloved chapter?
