YES! Do this! Empower teachers to take a stand against that which they know to be detrimental to the progress of their students, such as Common Core (and the inevitable high-stakes tests connected to same), and BACK THEM UP when they take this stand! Let's remember that so much more exists of a child than what is perceived through mere test scores, and nurture every aspect of their potential!

I have been a union President for 12 years of my 34 year teaching career. I am a union gal. But you have strayed from supporting rank and file. And that can't be. We can't allow that. If you aren't listening that means we aren't working hard enough or speaking out enough or telling you our expectations enough. But those days are over and we are telling you we expect you to support rank and file. We expect you to work to maintain collective bargaining, not promote CC. We expect you to advocate for salary and benefits for our members. We don't expect you to put corporate greed ahead of our hard working men and women. And we won't tolerate it anymore. We can't tolerate it anymore. Our children are losing.

As a member of the NEA, I formally request the following actions from the NEA administration:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF CHILDREN, TEACHERS AND ALL EDUCATION:

1. Complete and vocal opposition to Common Core Standards (CCSS) and the high stakes testing that goes with them.
CCSS are UNTESTED
CCSS are INADEQUATELY FUNDED
CCSS are DEVELOPMENTALLY INAPPROPRIATE
CCSS will EXPAND TESTING
CCSS results in SCRIPTED CURRICULUM
CCSS results in UNFAIR TEACHER EVALUATIONS

2. Complete and vocal support of all teachers including a massive campaign to save the profession.

TEACHERS need EMPOWERMENT
TEACHERS need AWARENESS
TEACHERS need TO BE TREATED AS PROFESSIONALS

3. Complete refusal of all Gates and Broad Foundations, Pearson and other CCSS monies to the NEA.

It is a CONFLICT OF INTEREST for the NEA to accept money from organizations that seek to destroy the teaching profession and the sound pedagogical education of our children.

We will no longer allow insidious, calculated attempts to circumvent democracy and take over our schools for profit. The NEA now caters to the corporate interests driving this agenda, and we will send a clear message to the entire membership that our visions no longer align.

We WILL PROTECT our CHILDREN and we will do it WITH or WITHOUT the NEA.

If the NEA truly believes we should surrender with regard to the issue of collective bargaining, I believe that it is my responsibility as a union official to suggest to my bargaining unit that we seek representation elsewhere. Collective bargaining should be sacrosanct. In Michigan, where we just had "right to work" jammed down our throats in an 11th hour, lame duck session, the State Police have collective bargaining protected in the state constitution...but not us. Don't you DARE wave the white flag on us.

I have been a life long member of NEA/OEA and my local association. I have served in a variety of capacities at the local level for 35 years. I consider myself a union person. I am al a loss as to why NEA is selling out members to support the common core. Stand up and fight against this. NEA should be supporting its membership not the reform movement!

Support your members NEA and not RTTT - say yes to helping teachers with collective bargaining and NO to Common Core and Merit pay

media sold us out. Society blames us for everything. Now, our union wants to see us out. Is it any wonder I refuse to teach in the US EVER again?

Those in the classroom in the US. . .go to another country and teach. I did. Just let the "reformers" destroy the system.

Go abroad to teach. I teach IGCSE and A-level History and Geography in Suzhou. I am paid amazingly well, work no more than four classes a day and have students that do the work, follow the rules and parents that support what I am doing. As well as a society that respects teachers and administrators that support everything we do if we can justify it.

Leave the US. Let Michelle Rhee and Bill Gates destroy everything. When it's destroyed and people want real education, come back.
