Chinese OEM says incident involving prototype took place under 'extreme, abnormal conditions'

Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy said blades on a giant prototype that broke in China fractured under extreme, abnormal conditions during testing, offering valuable insights as it refines the new model.
Recharge reported yesterday how images and videos appeared from multiple Chinese sources, including specialist wind power accounts, of blades falling from a turbine as it still spun. Other videos and pictures posted showed the turbine now static, missing two blades entirely.
They claimed that this was the MySE18.X-20MW prototype turbine
installed by Mingyang in the island province of Hainan in late August, which has a rotor diameter of 260-292 metres.
Mingyang Smart Energy said in a statement today that images published on social media show a newly developed prototype that Mingyang is testing at our large wind turbine test centre in Lingao, Hainan.
