Huston-Tillotson Prof Makes a Dumpster His Home

AUSTIN -- Meet environmental science professor Jeff Wilson of Huston-Tillotson University, better known as Professor Dumpster. Wilson's plan to live out of a waste-disposal container for a year has made international news, but this stunt isn't as crazy as it might seem. Dr. Wilson is performing an experiment with his students to explore sustainable living, and in the process garnering Huston-Tillotson some publicity.

With the help of a team of students, Wilson is renovating a typically, terrifyingly pungent Dumpster into a livable home conveniently located on campus grounds. Though he’ll still have his office, his car, and his job, he’s bereft of material possessions beyond basic necessities ... and he’ll retire every night to a six-by-six-foot metal box.

Wilson's goal is to become part of the "new one percent," using only one percent of the water and energy, and creating only one percent of the waste, of the average American home.

“The purpose of this project is to show how one can live in one percent the size of the average American home," he said. "It just happens to be a trashcan, and yes, there’s a little bit of a spectacle to that.”

I have to commend him for trying this, but I don't believe that he will use 1% of the average American's usage of resources. Since he is probably at work a lot of the day, or elsewhere besides sitting in his dumpster, he will be using OP's----other people's resources. But at least he is trying. Most of us are not trying this hard.
