US High-Speed Rail Map Shows How New Plans Might Work

(Newsweek) Arecent New Mexico transportation infrastructure meeting included a proposal from the High Speed Rail Alliance (HSRA) that revealed a new map showing how high speed rail systems might connect across the country.

The map shows federal regional rail plans for four proposed systems: the Midwest Regional Rail Plan, the Southeast Regional Rail Plan, the Southwest Regional Rail Plan, and the Northeast Corridor Plan.

The map was shared as part of the non-profit advocacy organization's proposal for high speed rail in New Mexico. This map (shown below) divides the U.S. into various regional plans, each with specific colored outlines. The Midwest Regional Rail Plan (green) covers major cities in the Midwest including Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit and St. Louis, with connections extending to the eastern and southeastern U.S.

The Southeast Regional Rail Plan (purple) encompasses cities from Washington, D.C. down to Miami, including major southern cities like Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville, while the Southwest Regional Rail Plan (yellow) includes cities in the southwestern U.S., with routes between Denver, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, and connections to southern California cities like Los Angeles and San Diego. .....................(more)

And would-be rail passengers aren’t the only ones getting screwed over these days. Not only are smaller towns and cities in danger of losing their bus service, but the convenient, centrally-located bus stations in big cities are being bought up and torn down by deep-pocketed real estate speculators.

“Sewer socialism” used to be a non-partisan consensus a lifetime ago, where cities and counties would own certain parts of infrastructure for the common good. That idea went down the toilet with the rise of the Reagansuts and the (fibber)tarians and their reflexive hostility to anything government-owned.
