DC/MD/VA: Some Metro trains using automation are overrunning station platforms
WASHINGTON (
7News) Since returning to using automation to run Red Line trains starting Dec. 15, Metro has seen several trains overrun the platform at various stations, leading to delays. But on Monday, a Metro spokesperson told 7News the overruns are not creating a safety hazard for riders.
At least seven times since Dec. 17, Metro has reported on its @Metrorailinfo account on X that Red Line trains have stopped beyond the platform of various stations, creating delays. The stations where the overruns have happened include NoMa-Gallaudet, Silver Spring, Fort Totten, Wheaton, Twinbrook, and Judiciary Square.
Metro spokesperson Kristie Benson told 7News that when a station overrun involving a train running on automation happens, fixing the problem is not as simple as the train operator manually backing the train up. She said that in most cases, the situation is looked into before the train is eventually cleared to advance to the next station.
Benson said when trains overrun a station platform, the doors do not open, and as a result, riders who want to get off at that station usually have to ride to the next station and then board a train running in the opposite direction for one stop. ................(more)
