Israeli government orders officials to boycott left-leaning paper Haaretz

Israel’s government is set to punish the country’s leading left-leaning newspaper, Haaretz, by ordering a boycott of the publication by government officials or anyone working for a government-funded body and halting all government advertising in its pages or website.

In a statement on Sunday, the office of Shlomo Karhi, the communications minister, said that his proposal against Haaretz had been unanimously approved by other ministers.

“We will not allow a reality in which the publisher of an official newspaper in the state of Israel will call for the imposition of sanctions against it and will support the enemies of the state in the midst of a war and will be financed by it,” the statement said.
...
The newspaper has published a series of investigations of wrongdoing or abuses by senior officials and the armed forces, and has long been in the crosshairs of the current government. It has also been a vocal supporter of the campaign for a ceasefire to free hostages seized by Hamas in October last year and still held in Gaza.

When he eviscerates the justice department will you still think we have a democracy?
When he takes away federal funds to blue states because they don't follow his whims will you still think we have a democracy?
When he fires the generals and officers involved in the Afghanistan pull out will you still think we have a democracy?
When his goons start pulling people off the streets will you still think we have a democracy?
When he gets a nationwide abortion ban will you still think we have a democracy?
If his justice department shuts down left wing sites will you still think we have a democracy?
When the last one happens you wont be able to finally tell me no.

Israeli Ministers Push Bill to Privatize Kan Public Broadcaster

'The bill's immediate significance is the full and total elimination of public broadcasting in Israel, fundamentally altering Israeli media. Such a drastic decision cannot be made hastily through a private bill,' the official legal opinion on the bill states. Journalists' unions say that 'about 1,000 employees who work in public broadcasting are being attacked by ministers and in order undermine freedom of the press'

9. Boycotting Haaretz: Part of Netanyahu's Masterplan to Destroy Press Freedom in Israel

The Israeli government's decision to punish Haaretz by imposing economic sanctions is one tactic in Netanyahu's comprehensive effort to muzzle, suffocate and supplant independent critical journalism in Israel

Make no mistake, the decision that was approved by the government of Israel on Sunday, to boycott Haaretz – imposing economic sanctions, forbidding any use of public funds for advertising or subscriptions – is not a stand-alone event.

It partners another incident, when one of Israel's most important investigative journalists, Ilana Dayan, was brutally attacked when she "dared" to tell CNN's Christian Amanpour that Israeli media doesn't show the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Shortly after this interview, Dayan was bombarded by incitement, hate speech, threats on social media and via text messages to her private cellphone, along with a clear delegitimization of her right to express the facts.

These are not separate incidents. This is part of a well-crafted masterplan by Netanyahu and his government to destroy press freedom in Israel and the independent media in this country.

The masterplan plays out in several dimensions..............

he gets more attention outside of Israel than he does inside where he is hated because he
speaks the truth .

David Horovitz is the other side of the journalistic political spectrum ......leans more towards the Right than the Left
least he used to ......probably best described as a Centralist .

When he writes this ......

BTW: I enjoyed listening to Gideon Levy years ago when I still watched TV. He's a smart guy with compassion who reminded me of this mensch:

The late, great Amos Oz, the "humane heart of Israel." Of course, he's pictured with his cat.
