GOP lawmakers take aim at LGBTQ+ ‘safe places’ program in small Florida town

Updated 2:00 PM EDT, September 2, 2023

MOUNT DORA, Fla. (AP) — Some central Florida lawmakers said they were considering “all legislative, legal and executive options available” to stop business owners in a small town from voluntarily displaying rainbow decals in their windows indicating that they are “safe place” for LGBTQ+ people who feel threatened.

Four Republican lawmakers wrote a letter to officials in Mount Dora two weeks ago warning that the new, optional city-sponsored program could put the central Florida community outside Orlando “in the crosshairs of potentially detrimental and absolutely unnecessary economic harm.”

The lawmakers cited boycotts of Bud Light and Target, which followed the brands’ efforts to promote diversity and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.

Mount Dora’s city council approved the Safe Place Initiative last month. The city of 17,000 residents is known for its antique shops and weekend festivals.

I don't know if I can post it, but I am thinking about it. It's damn chilling and is really based on a Hitler playbook. And is gaining acceptance. Then, who will be next.

Boycotting Bud Light - Well, since the only people who drink that are the same ones who are boycotting it, no loss there.

Boycotting Target - Yeah, I can tell they are really suffering. The idea that these bohunks could ever stop shopping at Target or stop drinking their favorite swill is laughable. They may have stopped doing it in public, but one need only to check that 'secret' cooler that everyone thought was trash under the counter in the garage.

These city council persons are voting for their citizenry, not their wallets. I know this is alien to a rethug, but see, elected officials are elected to serve the public trust, not to become a sideshow that turns our democracy into a clown parade of increasingly outrageous hucksters who are more interested in their own dick size than being the servant they were elected to be.

(Lastly, well... I am sorry, but 17,000 is not a 'small town'. Not when mine was 493 at my birth, and the town next to us was 148. One had to drive thirty minutes to find anything over 3000 souls. Which we considered a 'big town'. But, when your reporters are all in New York or Los Angeles, they marvel at any population under 300,000 as some kind of 'backwater'...)

Now they want to ban stickers? As was stated, the republicans want to make LGBTQIA people disappear.
