At a conference for young conservatives in Arizona Sunday, US President-elect Donald Trump said the official policy of his upcoming administration would be the recognition of only two genders, male and female, as he pledged to end "transgender lunacy on the first day of his presidency.
President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday pledged to "stop the transgender lunacy" on day one of his presidency, as Republicans set to control both chambers of Congress and the White House continue their push against LGBTQ rights.
"I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools," the president-elect said at an event for young conservatives in Phoenix, Arizona.
He also vowed to "keep men out of women's sports," adding that "it will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female."

(51,286 posts)There are basically only two genders (vast oversimplification that ignores transitioning, asex, bisex, non-binary, intersex, XXY, XYY, epigenetics, and a lot more that would not be useful to get into or detail here) but that doesn't matter because:
1. You are who you are inside your lived experience especially in your mind.
2. You can choose who you want to be and become that because it is your lived experience and your mind.
3. Outward appearances are malleable to varying degrees at varying expense with varying risk, but they are to help other people understand better who you are. You know who you are: you are you.
4. Governmental policy can throw awful roadblocks to designations on drivers licenses and competitions of certain kinds and such, but that doesn't change who you are because that is inside.
5. Take comfort that you are who you are regardless of what people see or say or think they see.
6. If we are going to allow, as we do as a society, breast enlargement and penis enhancement, then as a society where all people have equal rights (yeah, I know...) it does not matter what chromosomes you have if you want your breast enlarged or your penis enhanced or both: you are allowed to do it.
7. I am sorry that people have to suffer because of repressive busybodies who have a ridiculously narrow outlook on life (yes, that's you, evangullibles and maga).
8. Carry on as best as you can, knowing you are you.
What is government gonna do when we understand gene regulation and epigenetics to the degree where we will be able to grow feathers or gills? It's coming, unlikely in my lifetime, but it is coming.

(752 posts)It's very easy to tell trans folks that they can be who they are in their (our) heads...but that's forcing people to stay in or return to a closet where the rest of the world doesn't see you for who you are. It's worse than being invisible.
So if you're trying to make trans people feel better, please don't give facile advice, especially in person, no matter how well-meaning. If someone said that to me, I would understand that the gulf between us is so vast that they had no idea how it is for trans folks. And instead of asking, they just trotted out platitudes.

(51,286 posts)Did you stumble over the words sorry and suffer or glide right over them? For some people "suffer" is a pale approximation of what they are going or may go through at the hands of a rough society, but I chose not to go into gory detail of what that might be since as only an ally I'm not the one to explain that so I didn't.
Of course it is not easy being trans anywhere anytime but likely worse in USA in next four years. Allies are not forcing people into closets, bigots are. I wrote carefully so you can't find any point in my post that suggests in the slightest that people vilified by tRump should shut up or hide or change appearance. If they decide to do so, that is their decision and might be a wise one for personal safety. If they decide to NOT do so, that is their decision and might be a wise one for leading the movement and society by example. Whatever they decide, they remain themselves. Clear enough for you?
I wrote the post as a counter to tRump's bogus idea that declaring "there are only two genders" somehow makes trans go away, countered most directly by my point #2. External definitions do not fundamentally change who a person is inside, where it counts. The rest just sort of flowed out. Sorry.
