Feminism and #DNC2012

Last edited Tue Sep 4, 2012, 03:24 PM - Edit history (1)

I thought this would be a cool time to look at the kick-ass women going into The Main Event this week. I don't know all of the upcoming events, but I thought we could collectively put together some highlights of women at the Democratic National Convention.

My picks today--PBS's all female line-up Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff team up as a historical first for a network's convention coverage:

Also today from CarolinaFest 2012, the festival in Charlotte, NC kicking off events my new girlcrush Janelle Monae who opened with an amazing set:

""I'm here today because I support a man who's looking out for women." Janelle Monae #carolinafest #DNC2012"

(I hope someone will upload some video from her performance today. I'll keep checking.)

edit--link to a page with a nice video of highlights: http://oldschool1053.com/2960176/janelle-monae-wows-fans-at-democratic-national-convention-video

I gave her a follow last night, so I'll be ready to watch. Yay!

Tonight is Michelle Obama--that will probably be on C-Span, I hope.

The Women's Caucus is meeting right now, I have to get ready to go though: http://www.demconvention.com/community/women/
Hopefully I'll catch some tweets about it later.

Judd does a HUGE amount of social justice work, both here and overseas. She even went back to grad school at Harvard a couple years ago to get an MPA. After college, she almost went into the Peace Corps instead of acting, but did NOT want to go to Yemen, so went to Hollywood, instead. It seems she has kinda come full circle.

I like her and I like that she has Feminist listed on her Twitter description!

OH. MY. GOSH. DONNA BRAZILE. SENSATIONAL at Women caucus! I just went to church! Almost cruel to have to speak after her!

That picture is from another news story. I'll try to find some videos too. The Dem Convention website isn't uploading stuff to their video page as fast as I want them to.

Which sometimes makes her pedantic, but I forgive it, because she really does practice what she preaches. Most of her tweets are pretty political (except when she's live tweeting her husband's auto racing).

Michelle Obama, of course, who owned the night.

I also loved Tammy Duckworth.

And Lilly Ledbetter.

And a runaway favorite, Julian Castro's little daughter:

I loved little Carina stealing the spotlight too, and her parents took it in stride. Here is an article on Castro's speech and his daughter's reaction: http://colorlines.com/archives/2012/09/carina_victoria_shantay_you_stay_video.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Michelle's speech hit all the right notes. I like that the emphasis this year is on working people and unity of different groups--my memories of the last couple of conventions are that they were primarily about just opposing Bush and his agenda. Now it seems like they can talk about what a people powered movement can achieve. And I'm really liking that there are so many women speaking. I can't wait to see Elizabeth Warren too!
