In Europe for more than 10 years. And at Stanford at least one student had one 9 years ago.

Don't know what is new about them. It is a very good idea though.

Of one when I first saw one in Holland 15ish years ago. Not sure I can dig it out.

I was shopping yesterday and this was in the lobby of the shopping area. Like most I have seen is has electric and hand cranks.
Twin batteries on each side of the wheel with electric hub. It even has a headlight.
