Related: About this forumWe don't have a dementia or death group........I think we should have both, JMHO
as my husband of 44 years did die of late term dementia today. Had the damn disease for about 4 years, he died this morning at 9:15 or so I missed his passing by 15 minutes. We all knew it was coming, he hadnt eaten or really drank anything for 3 days or so. I felt so lucky to at least feel the cooling of his body. Was at least there for that. Funny how you can feel the warmth of his alive body pass into the cold of his death. I have been missing him for at least the last year or so. He forgot a ton of stuff and I couldnt carry on a conversation with him for a long time. Its just so sad what that damn disease does to a person. Im alone now for real without him. He was mentally gone but his death is so permanent and total now.

(3,275 posts)Most folks know or have someone close in their life and are dealing with these issues. Dementia is bitch. It would be good to have both groups!

(10,388 posts)I am living thru this now with my sister and it is, as you said, so sad what this disease does to a person. You are not alone, though. We are here for you and with you.

(113,131 posts)but I agree we need a dementia group for both caregivers and for people in the early stages who are coping the best they can.

(7,273 posts)Hard to lose him twice. May his memory be a blessing and may you--after a while--begin to remember him as he was.
For now, please take good care of yourself and accept help and love from friends and loved ones.

(22,950 posts)Yes, caregiving and/or having a loved one with dementia is difficult... I was a caregiver for years... one being my father with dementia... it helps tremendously to have people to talk to
