(63,221 posts)I am curious as to why certain parts of the world have such high rates of depression. If it was a simple matter of poverty then it would affect many other parts of the world as well, but it doesn't. There must be something else that factors in.

(11,119 posts)Recent studies (you have to Google for them) have shown that a Vitamin D deficiency can result in depression. Most people get enough Vitamin D from dairy products and sunlight but if you are an indoorsy introvert, that may not be enough sunlight for some of us!
If you're an introvert and you are suffering from depression from no discernible emotional traumas, the Vitamin D deficiency MAY be the reason why... Your body uses Vitamin D to synthesize serotonin which is a natural substance that makes you feel as though life is worth living.
So if you're Vitamin D deficient then you're are more likely to be depressed. If you have health insurance, and you talk to your doctor about depression, ask your doctor to test you for this deficiency BEFORE allowing him/her to prescribe anti-depressants.
My .02 cents! Have a great day everybody! I make this post periodically - it may give someone another avenue to explore WRT their depression...

(23,648 posts)Whenever it is sunny I stand outside for awhile and feel so much better. My late mother was always depressed and was not an outdoors person. Seeing this growing up I vowed to never let depression get ahold of me. When I feel down I go out in the sun.

(4,554 posts)My depression has been under relatively good control for a few years, but occasionally I have what I call "breakthrough depression." It's a good reminder of how bad things can get if I don't take care of myself. Depression, for me, is the worst possible thing to endure.

Really great info!
