You have to learn tricks to turn that crap off.
Thought stopping has worked for me in the past, and it's very simple.
At the first sign of one of those awful thoughts you yell in your mind as loudly as you can yell in your mind: STOP!!
And when it restarts, same deal: STOP!
And eventually your brain gets the message that your conscious mind is not going to allow it to ruminate. You can add to the technique by quickly substituting a happy thought, a positive admonition, or as one poster said, soothing music.
It sounds kind of simple minded, but it can work for some people
