Look at this Kohlrabi I Grew





I remember the first time I tasted kohlrabi. My mom, an expert and passionate gardener, cut one up for me when I was a little girl. I recall I loved the purple color, but she peeled it and cut it into bite-sized match sticks. All she did was sprinkle seasoning salt over it and it made it taste so delicious. I'll never forget it.

Now here it is many decades later and I am teaching kids in middle school to love vegetables by planting them in the school garden. Last year I had one little girl who fell in love with kohlrabi. In our after school classes, we first taste the vegetable and then we go outside to the school garden and plant them. I like to choose vegetables they most likely don't have at home, such as kohlrabi or yard-long Chinese beans.

I plan to cut this kohlrabi into match sticks, too, but I have sesame ginger vinaigrette that I will use as a dip.

the school board must hear of this "critical garden theory" in our schools~!

i have never grown a kolrabbi, but my tomatoes and peppers are better every year. for kids, the easiest "gateway vegetables" are radishes and shallots.

What a weird looking veggie, but it's cruciferous right?

I'm always on the lookout for new fruits and veggies to try, but cruciferous veggies are troublesome for me. About the only ones I can eat are the cabbages. Everything else either has an overpowering sulfury taste or is super-bitter. It doesn't matter how they're served or made. They all taste sulfury or too bitter.

So does it fall on the cabbage end for flavor, the Brusssels sprouts (sulfur) end, or the kale (bitter) end? If some should show up at one of my markets, I'd hate to waste money on something I hate, when someone else could be eating it.
