Lincoln's big mistake (IMO) was to push for unity after the Civil war. It did not work for him and a southern coward shot him in the back of the head. I truly believe that Lee should have been arrested and hung right after the proceedings at Appomattox. All his commanders should have been tired. Anyone in the confederate government should have been tried. There has to be a sever accounting for sedition and treason.
The idea of unity has caused America to continue a cold civil war for 150 years. The south has celebrated their Civil war treason for years. Our nation is just now starting to push back on southern celebrations of treason. We need to come down hard on the people who attacked our government. It is the only path that will put this behind us. Unity now will not unite us.
