I went to a ceremony honoring him a few years ago where his 4 living children spoke.
My paternal grandfather, son of Irish immigrants, joined up with his brother (my great uncle) and delivered ammunition to the front on horseback. And my maternal grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Poland, they made him a citizen and sent him to France. However, I never met either of them, they passed away at 48 and 52, respectively.

(60,265 posts)2. I remember as a boy talking to a neighbor, he was a veteran of WW1,
an ambulance driver and he spoke about how they drove at night without any lights on, so as not to give away their location.
I couldn't imagine how anyone could do that without crashing?

I wish I could ask him - but he passed away on Christmas Eve 1998 at 101.
