it would certainly have a political impact in Japan if the Japanese A-bomb projects were better known.

Most US govt officials at the same made the racist assumption that Japan was too primitive to have a chance at developing the a bomb.

Germany by contrast never got very far in their efforts, and when Manhattan project scientists realized that it was part of the reason many opposed using the a bomb on Japan.
