"Fudd
Slang term for a "casual" gun owner; eg; a person who typically only owns guns for hunting or shotgun sports and does not truly believe in the true premise of the second amendment. These people also generally treat owners/users of so called "non sporting" firearms like handguns or semiautomatic rifles with unwarranted scorn or contempt. "

Was browsing through videos over at YouTube and came across one where the person talked about how much ammo one should have on hand. His argument was that history and studies show that one doesn't need much for self defense, hunting or SHTF. Then I started reading the comments and started thinking that there's a lot of radical people out there who have a lot of guns and lots of ammo. Some were calling the video FUDD propaganda and I had to google search what they meant by that.
On a side note, there is also this definition of FUDD which interestingly got far more dislikes then like:
"A slur against "casual" and/or non-militant gun owners, employed by pro-gun extremists. Derived from the Warner Bros. cartoon character, Elmer Fudd, it implies that anyone who does not carry an assault weapon, militarize their hunting & shooting practice, belong to a militia, and/or advocate for the same with fanatical zeal, is somehow stupid, incompetent with their weapon, and out of touch. Essentially, this allows the extremists to marginalize and discount any gun user who isn't crazy."

(11,733 posts)I am one of the 90%. Those are the people who owns guns and will not join the NRA. I have no desire to join their "well regulated" penis extension clubs either.
My rifles are bolt action and shoot one round every three seconds if I push it. My aim is good enough that I don't need a 100 shot magazine or the ability to squeeze off 50+ rounds in a minute.

(38,732 posts)The discussion isn't about banning a particular style of gun but about how much ammo is enough? He made no mention of guns. The comments section was interesting. Many agreed with what was said in the video but there were quite a few that blasted it. Calling the YouTuber names and saying this was FUDD propaganda.

(11,996 posts)Which I would 1st figure is often about how much you can afford - usually cheaper to buy in bulk, at least online.
Guess it more depends on how much 'you' plan to shoot. Probably for just hunting (ha - say, as a FUDD might), a few boxes is enough.

(3,315 posts)That some don't get, is that 1000 or 5000 rounds isn't all that much.
Firstly, to get a decent price, or make it worthwhile to set up a reloading run, 1000 rounds is at the beginning of the point of feasibility.
Second is that accuracy takes practice. I'd rather have my 3 round bolt action, and have put 250 rounds through it at the range recently, than some plastic fantastic with 10 30 round mags that I haven't used in a couple of years. Likewise, a few hundred rounds through my trusty 6 shot revolver is preferable to something my dog migh chew up with a bunch of 17 round mags.
Although even the idiotic kerfuffle over magazines misses a major argument for them (in my opinion): when time at the range is precious- hard to come by and/or by the hour expensive- having 5-10 mags loaded up is just common sense, and loading any firearm when it's cold and nasty is annoying, even though all of my firearms don't even use magazines!
My firearms are all pretty much 100+ year old designs, and I am a 'fudd' in the sense that I am pretty sure that if I can't defend myself with 6 rounds in a Colt revolver, I'm basically fucked anyway. Ain't going to stand down a much of bad guys, but enough to protect home and family against some random tweaker trying to kick in the door.

Old school is understanding that newer isn't always better, appreciating skill and craftsmanship over plastic and CNC milled, and precision over spraying.
FUDD is country club skeet shooter looking down their noses at the maid who buys a Hi Point to defend herself.

(38,732 posts)FUDD was someone who thinks that a 6 shot revolver is adequate for home defense.
Your comment:
"FUDD is country club skeet shooter looking down their noses at the maid who buys a Hi Point to defend herself. "
It isn't just snobbish country club skeet shooters who look down on anyone who buys a Hi Point for self defense.
Maybe later if i have time, I'll cut and past comments describing who, in their opinion, are FUDD and what makes a person FUDD

(29,079 posts)This "country club skeet shooter" thing bears no resemblance whatsoever to the FUDD insults I've seen over the years, both here and elsewhere. Economic class doesn't come into it.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)Has less to do with class (although the economic barriers in Europe and Japan, as well as proposed regulations here like taxes, insurance fees, etc is vary class based) as it is "OK to ban what I like", don't care if it doesn't affect me is one definition.
Preferring old school doesn't make you a FUDD. Saying everything else should be banned makes you a FUDD.
A revolver is objectively adequate for self defense and hunting. Saying that or preferring that doesn't make you a FUDD. A FUDD wants that to be the only choice.

(38,732 posts)And while I do enjoy watching Yankee Marshal's YouTube channel, I don't think he's in the same league as Paul Harrell, GunGuyTV, GunBlue490 and some others.
After doing some further reading at sites, I think how one defines "FUDD" depends on how radicalized the gun owner is. The guy who is prepping for possible war with a tyrannical U.S. government that ignores the Constitution has a different definition then you or Yankee Marshal has.

Very damn few, in my estimation...

You mean the guys YM calls "tacticooltards". I can imagine. A woman I grew up with and very close to, and learned how to shoot with as kids, is very pro 2A, but personally prefers revolvers and thinks a knife is a better defense from sexual assault than a pistol. Frankly, I can't argue with her reasoning or her experience.
But, I would never call her a Fudd.

(18,603 posts)...an aggressor who appeared innocuous. An up close and personal defense seems perfectly reasonable.
One of the Fuddish guys I worked with a long time ago had a Plumleyesque kind of attitude about ARs and such: "If the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground."

(38,732 posts)I imagine serious shooters go through a lot of ammo and would have quite a bit on hand. Me, I shoot maybe a box of 50 rounds a year and I'm as accurate as I need to be. I do dry fire drills 2-3 times a week, about 10-15 minutes a drill using dummy rounds, with all live ammo accounted for and locked up, in my home when there is no one else here.
I sometimes lurk over at AR15.com and read some interesting comments about magazine capacity at a shooting range. many said they prefer the 20 round and even some liked the 10 round over the 30 round because having a 30 round mag in their rifle made firing from the prone position awkward. some said they kept the 30 round magazines at home for social work and went to the range with the 10 or 20 round mags.

(3,315 posts)I like gun shows because I can stock up my first aid kit more than anything else. Some whack jobs there. But that doesn't lead me to believe that a basic plastic fantastic AR type rifle is a bad thing nor that the people who like them are evil idiots. Just like I have lots of first aid stuff and know how to use it ('ditch medicine', what to do when the nearest hospital is a pile of rubble, since the 3 nearest are all right near a fault line)
SHTF is a spectrum; there are some potential cases of civil unrest where being armed is simple common sense, like having a fire extinguisher at home, better to never need it, than to need and not have. I live on an earthquake fault; and having lived here for 50+ years, lots of people know I have water (and purification), food, a generator, first aid gear, etc. I presume that there are possibly people who I might have to defend myself against. Not that I want to, nor think it likely, and hell, I'd gladly share what I have with anyone in need who asks nicely, but there is a non-zero chance of a situation like Katrina where civil authority is non-existent for days or weeks. I see that as quite different from a nutter who thinks they are going to rebuild a ravaged civilisation with their 500K rounds and 100 years worth of freeze dried foods. Any non-zero possibility should be prepared for.

(706 posts)Before the great ammo shortage of 2013-14 he probably had less than one box of ammo for any gun he has. He was really taken back by the shortage of .22 lr ammo since it's mostly what he shoots. I don't look at that type of fudd as bad but it seems appropriate. He even refers to himself as a fudd. Once ammo started coming back to the shelves, he stocked up. No ammo fort but enough that some higher level fudds might kick him out of the fudd club
As for me... ain't telling
