Spectrum News! A great bonus for leaving AT&T.

Spectrum has a dedicated local SoCal news station and another for Costa Mesa matters. A ton of local matters. Arts - Politics - food - local activities. Positivity on one channel.

Neither channel feature violence or car chases. And that is part of Spectrum News mission statement.

"Spectrum News operates on a model of not carrying news about violent crimes, common auto accidents and fires (known in the industry as 'if it bleeds, it leads' journalism), unless a story involving one is so large and affecting, that coverage is effectively required to remain competitive."

I wondered and investigated whether or not they use an algorithm to feed us the types of reporting and stories we'd likely watch. And conversely whether others are getting a feed from the OC Register. Though it is interesting how much less political the Register seems these days.

Based on the Old Time Warner NY1. Spectrum was formed in a merger of Charter with Time Warner's RoadRunner cable system. I liked Time Warner Better. But from the service that my Mom gets from Comcast, I guess they are ok.

Spectrum is seemingly trying to engage through focusing on local stories. And in SoCal this man is my new hero.

The billionaire who bought the LA Times: ‘Hipsters will want paper soon’

Patrick Soon-Shiong despises clickbait and says the future belongs to quality journalism. Will his gamble pay off?

And I appreciate his worldview born of his own family tradition.

Soon-Shiong: Michele and I both come from Hakka families. The original Hakka in China believed in total community collaboration, and the warrior is the woman, and she is as strong as the man.

I'm embarrassed to say I knew nothing about this new owner and his impressive life story. He seems to be functioning extremely well under the radar.

Born in South Africa to Chinese parents, rose from humble origins and ended up in Los Angeles where he has thrived as a surgeon, scientist and entrepreneur. “The richest doctor in the history of the world,” Forbes magazine declared in 2014.

A bright, restless mind, Soon-Shiong is now seeking to remedy a very different source of malignant metastasis: news.
